The Concept of Unity of Being in the Poetry of Mulla Jaziri through the Metaphors of Ibn Arabi

Abstract

The concept of the Unity of Being (Wahdat al-Wujūd) in Kurdish poetry, particularly in the works of Mulla Jaziri, is examined on the basis of the analogies proposed by the Andalusian mystic Ibn Arabi. This study explores the relationship between the divine realm and human material existence. Conceptually, the Unity of Being has two meanings: (1) God is present within all beings; and (2) all beings are, in essence, identical with God. The latter reflects the philosophy of Plotinus. The conception of the Unity of Being that became prominent in Islamic mysticism regards all created beings as manifestations or parts of the divine world, while maintaining that God alone is the Absolute Reality and that all other beings originate from Him. This study suggests that Mulla Jaziri drew upon Ibn Arabi's analogical framework while also incorporating some of his own interpretations. The findings indicate that Mulla Jaziri adhered to the Islamic doctrine of the Unity of Being, according to which human beings and all created things are manifestations of the divine reality rather than God Himself. His understanding therefore differs from the Western conception that identifies the entire universe and all material existence with God. In Jaziri's view, God alone is Absolute Being, whereas everything else is a reflection or manifestation of that absolute existence. This conception is expressed through recurring analogies such as light, water and the sea, the mirror and its reflection, and divine manifestations.
