The empty signifier, an innovative concept in the work of Laclau and Mouffe, offers a powerful framework for reading texts and analyzing differentiated domains of discourse and their constituent elements. Like other concepts in literary theory and criticism, the empty signifier enables researchers to uncover hidden meanings and signs within a text, as well as to trace how words are used, transformed, and positioned within semantic and epistemic fields. This study applies Laclau and Mouffe’s theory of the empty signifier to Jabar Jamal Gharib’s The Fall of the Skies, focusing on the key signifiers highlighted in the text. The analysis demonstrates the central role of empty signifiers in structuring language and discourse, showing how they are articulated, stabilized, and invested with meaning. It further examines how the character of Aso is constructed and how dominant discourse, through empty signifiers, fills textual gaps, establishes equivalences, and defines boundaries. Religious discourse, through the strategic deployment of empty signifiers, occupies linguistic voids, shapes character development—particularly Aso—and addresses desires that society has left unfulfilled. This study highlights the interpretive power of empty signifiers in literature and their role in mediating social, cultural, and ideological dimensions within a text.
