A significant and original concept in the ouvre of Laclau and Mouffe, the empty signifier is a noteworthy tool for reading texts and analyzing the fields of discourse and its components. Like other terms in literary theory and criticism, the empty signifier helps the researcher to reveal the symbols and gaps in the heart of the text. It demonstrates the way the words are used and their place in the semantic and cognitive field. In this research, attempt has been made to explore the Jabar Jamal Gharib’s Falling of the Heavens in terms of Laclau and Mouffe’s conception of the term, and to address and investigate the empty signifiers in the novel. To realize this, Laclau’s discourse theory and specialized concepts, including the empty signifier, are first examined and then specified in the text of the novel. The results indicate what significant role the empty signifiers have in language and discourse structure and how they are articulated and fixed. Additionally, how the character of Aso, introduced in this novel, is formed and how the dominant discourse fill the gaps through the empty signifier, creates parallelism and equivalence, defines it, and specifies its border. Religious discourse, through the use of the empty signifiers, has been able to fill the void of the words according to their purpose and to impact the characters within the text, especially Aso, through the fulfillment of those desires that the society has been unable to address.
