This study examines three historical periods of the Kurdish language. First, using linguistic and historical evidence, it is demonstrated that the ancient languages of Avestan and Median were not distinct from each other, and that the ancient languages of the Zagros Mountains significantly influenced the roots of the Kurdish language—both phonetically, morphologically, syntactically, and semantically. This period is considered the Old or Ancient Period (first) of Kurdish from a historical perspective. Following the Median and Achaemenid eras, this language became known as Eastern Pahlavi or Central Median, prevalent in the land of Media, which is referred to as the Middle Period (second) of Kurdish. After the advent of Islam, the language continued to exist in its various forms and dialects under the name of Modern Kurdish. The findings of this study indicate that the current Kurdish dialects, including Hawrami, are direct descendants of the ancient Avestan-Median languages and the languages of the peoples of the Zagros Mountains. Historically, these languages later evolved into what historians call Western Pahlavi or Central Median in the land of Media. Poets, songwriters, and performers used this language in celebrations throughout Media, and it continues to be sung and recited. Today, it is known to many Kurds as “Gorani,” and ordinary people in the Hawraman region still speak it.
